THERE is an unmistakable hometown Glasgow tinge to Mark McGowan’s music, amid his rustic Texan-like blues vocals. Truly, the sounds do the talking; echoing the scene of a drifting busker moving from town to town. There is no flashness to any of it; stripped back with no pretense – no gimmicks.

The Fugazi EP is McGowan’s follow up to his 2015 AA-side ‘Bonnie & Clyde/Colour of Surrender’, which saw him receive notable local attention and a name for himself on Glasgow’s live circuit. His latest offering doesn’t stray far from the feel of the first; a lot of prominent picking on the guitar and distinct soul through McGowan’s lyrics and vocals. The EP’s lyrical themes continue to slot fittingly into classical blues, particularly on the title track which seemingly talks of a son confronting his runaway absent father.

Rest assured, however, that this release is not a twee nod to 50’s folk blues. There is a current undertone to it all; a contemporary twang that compliments the more quintessential aspects of McGowan’s music rather than substitutes them. Here we have an EP that is ample easy listening, yet a little deeper beneath the surface.

M’Fugazi’ will certainly do no harm to Mark McGowan as he continues to build a rep for himself within Scottish acoustic circles. The 4-track EP is out now and available for download.
