SINCE they first got sweaty clubs and festival tents rocking to their unique blend of indie-rock, dance and hip-hop, The LaFontaines have become a centrepiece of the Scottish live circuit, and as they get ready to take to Edinburgh once again, TTV caught up with drummer Jamie for a chat.

Sounding like a self-confessed “snazzy dream”, The LaFontaines have been building their unique sound from an early age, when a bit of envy and inspiration started Jamie’s musical journey.

“Watching my big brother Paul playing in his band from school at the time. I was about 11 and thought it was amazing. He had cool clothes and girlfriends.”

“That, and then watching The Red Hot Chili Peppers concert from Slane Castle and Nirvana Unplugged.”

The band have graced festivals up and down the country from the highlands to the borders, but their hectic summers only add to their momentum.

“It never tires me. I look forward to playing any gigs, anywhere, any size. Every year we’re getting better slots offered to us and every year we play to bigger crowds. Keep them coming!”

Part of their ability to continually climb the ladder of festival stages year upon year, is due to the electrifying nature of their live shows. A gig that once it has been seen, is difficult to forget in a hurry, but why?

“Kerr’s a good frontman that crows just do what he tells them. He forces them to join in whether they want to or not. That, and the drums are just so good.”

Last week, The LaFontaines found themselves fulfilling an inspiration of all rising bands, when their tune took centre stage on Radio One, played by Annie Mad.

“It’s cool that she played it but I don’t know anything about her or that. Just her name. I’d be more buzzing if it was on Trevor Nelson or Craig Charles or any of them on Radio 2.”

As Summer Sessions comes to Edinburgh for the first time, The LaFontaines join an incredible lineup of musicians. Jamie gave us his top picks and what the Edinburgh crowd can expect from their set.

“Hopefully get a chance to get to see yer man from the Beach Boys do ‘Pet Sounds’. Tom Jones too, I think he will be brilliant.”

“Expect us to have nice tans and they can also expect to see us looking happy.” Tickets for Summer Sessions are on-sale now.
