ediEDINBURGH’S The Fruitmarket Gallery has taken the first crucial step in a massive £11 million redevelopment which would force the city’s Electric Circus venue to close its doors.

Situated on Market Street, the art gallery has now been given the go-ahead by Edinburgh City Council to expand into additional properties and this would result in the closure of one of Edinburgh’s few remaining hubs of live music.

A location which plays an important role in allowing burgeoning acts to access the city’s music-loving audiences ranging from local talent to acts from across the UK, it is expected that the venue will close in 2019 provided that there are no difficulties in the gallery attaining the necessary funding.

The sad fact of the matter is that if Edinburgh’s gig venues continue to close at such an alarming rate, Scotland’s musical vibrancy as a whole will be affected and therefore TTV support The Electric Circus in any and all attempts to prevent its closure.
