LITTLE TIGER RECORDS have been busy of late with one impressive release after the next. By teaming up with some of Scotland’s most prodigious young talents, the student run label based at Riverside Music Complex have continued to broaden their output by covering a wide range of genres and styles. Their latest offering comes from a special duo called Fenella with their new single ‘I Will Not Win’.

Comprised of vocalist Mairi Fenella Whittle and pianist/guitarist Jack Boyce, the duo take inspiration from a plethora of legendary artists such as Nico, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground and Billie Holiday while crafting their own gorgeous bluesy take on modern jazz. ‘I Will Not Win’ provides a stunning introduction for those yet to come across the duo; Mairi’s unbelievable lead vocal deservedly taking centre stage over a simple yet complementary arrangement of piano and acoustic guitar. Reminiscent of jazz singers of the past, her warm and expressive vocals deliver her evocative lyrics with great feeling; moving from moments of vulnerability and reflection to bursts of self-assured defiance.

The accompanying video is a simple yet very effective idea. Directed by Neil Mackenzie, the black and white visual is an unbroken shot of the singer as she stares down the camera. With a stirring effect on the viewer, it allows the focus to remain on her stunning vocals and moving lyrics.

Fenella will play at Broadcast on Thursday 9th March with The Seshen.
