The band: Of Montreal are a Georgia based band who are known for their extremely experimental work which encapsulates a wide variety of genres ranging from punk to jazz and funk. Part of the Elephant 6 collective that includes the revered Neutral Milk Hotel, they have released 12 albums to date, the latest being last year’s Lousy With Sylvanbriar. After a brief lay off they have returned with latest single ‘Bassem Sabry’, taken from their upcoming 13th record.
The sound: The track itself is a highly energetic affair, driven by a funky riff and retro synthesizers that provide an intriguing element to its composition. Kevin Barnes’ vocals are on typically flamboyant form, coming across as somewhere between a youthful David Bowie and a demented James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.
The lowdown: Their latest record Aureate Gloom is scheduled to be released via Polyvinyl on March 3rd 2015.
