pokey lafarge something in the waterThe Band: Paying homage to 1950’s country, blues and rock n’ roll and taking influence from Muddy Waters to Elvis Presley, Pokey LaFarge has gained a cult fanbase of post war guitar music revivalists. His career was further repelled when he caught the eye of Jack White who then signed him to Third Man Records, a record label that sanctioned the release of his eponymous debut album.

The Sound: The track starts with instrumentals that could easily feature on a rag-time silent movie, ‘Something In the Water’ has a fantastically unusual charm to it. As the song builds however it begins to take on more of an Eddie Cochrane vibe encorporated with shakin’ and tremblin’ guitar worthy of a place on any Chet Atkins album.

The Video: It features Pokey and his apparent love affair falling out and falling back in again several times, and getting up to an incredible amount of shenanigans while doing it. A large old woman also features, presumably her mum.

The Lowdown: Pokey is now on Rounder Records and his new album Something In the Water will be released April 7th, along with three UK tour dates (below).
