Having emerged from the shadows last month with the brilliant ‘SUPERCLOSEUPS’, this latest offering is a direct follow-up and forms Part Two of his study in lust and obsession. Once again, his unique creative vision surpasses the boundaries of music; video and track coming together to create a powerful art piece that has a lasting effect on its viewer.

Where ‘SUPERCLOSEUPS’ lured itself into your consciousness with its brooding melody and foreboding atmospherics, ‘INFATUATION’ cranks everything up a notch; marking an aggressive shift in perspective. The same themes and visual tropes are there, both in music and video, but everything becomes increasingly dramatic and nightmarish this time around. Part one may introduce us to the darkness surrounding obsession and lust but part two conveys the feeling of becoming fully submerged by it.

A clatter of harsh electronic sounds and grinding rhythms reintroduce you to this dark world, with images of him in a bathtub flashing furiously in front of you. Haunted vocals come in (“you make me sweat like no one else”) to reinforce the feeling of unease; the lyrics capturing a tortured mind that can’t rid itself of dirty thoughts. Meanwhile, the menacing rhythms of the verse build up to a searing release on the chorus with the echoing sounds of industrial post-punk coming to the forefront in dramatic fashion. The shouts of “infatuation” feel distant but they are no less effective in ingraining themselves in your brain,as if trying to break free from its tight grip but to no avail.

As it progresses, the video becomes increasingly sinister and uncomfortable to watch; effectively using the strangely intimate imagery to subvert the notion of sensuality and turn it into a nightmarish equivalent. Disturbing as it may become, it makes for compelling viewing. Unable to remove your eyes from it, the viewer inadvertently becomes locked in this world of obsession without even realising.

Just when you think it’s over, black and white images take over and the track becomes eerily restrained and quiet, before one final explosion of pent up aggression sees it finish in typically dramatic fashion with a scream of vocals over a clattering backdrop.
