THE BAND: Transcending the confines of a band and operating within an ongoing conceptual idea, London’s Public Service Broadcasting were lauded for their originality and their ability to inject an overarching central theme into an entire full length release. Both multi instrumentalists in their own right, the duo re-purpose poignant or significant audio from archive footage and archaic public information films in order to create music with a clear and succinct message. After releasing the first single from their sophomore album last year, they have returned with the ethereal ‘The Other Side.’
THE SOUND: ‘The Other Side’ is an exercise in restraint and patience from the London based act. Sampling authoritative remarks of ground control during Apollo 8’s launch, the track features gentle strains of guitar going on to adopt more menacing tones to create suspense and impact. Encapsulating the tension of the event with their use of suspenseful pauses, this is one of PBS’s most accomplished compositions to date.
