AFTER a globe-trotting tour, and a few support slots with Liam Gallagher and the Rolling Stones, Britpop icon Richard Ashcroft has dropped a new single, taken from his forthcoming album ‘Natural Rebel’.

‘Surprised by the Joy’ is exactly that, a joyful, 60’s-influenced ballad that screams Ashcroft, harking back to the indie landscape The Verve cemented themselves in throughout the 1990s. Central to the sound of Ashcroft’s career is the unmistakable pairing of jangling acoustic guitar, with Ashcroft’s raspy vocals that show no sign of wavering despite his relentless performing. As bass and drums drive the song from verse to verse, they are linked by a crescendo of rich, orchestral strings that complement the rock ‘n’ roll roots of the track perfectly. While many artists strive to explore new ‘experimental’ avenues, it is testament to the longevity of Ashcroft’s songwriting and sound that he is able to release timeless tracks that bleed Britpop, with peppering of sixties psychedelia.

The self-directed video captures Richard Ashcroft at his brilliant best, with trademark sunglasses, hair hanging down and seemingly effortless swagger, all together in the driving seat of a classic red convertible.

The remainder of 2018 sees Ashcroft continue the busy wave he is currently winding, with his latest album ‘Natural Rebel’ being released on October 19th, set to be another chart-topping album for the songwriter, available to pre-order now. Alongside all of this, Richard Ashcroft is also embarking on a run of intimate UK shows, all of which are unfortunately sold out.
