The artist: Karen O is well known for her outstanding voice and  stage presence, releasing four albums in ten years with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her track ‘The Moon Song’ and this new offering ‘Rapt’ is a step-up from that gentle song.

The sound: Lullaby vocals and simple chords give this song a subtle sound. At just 1:51 minutes long and with just enough swear words to give it the Karen O edge, ‘Rapt’ is a sweet little preview of what’s to come from the new album.

The video: Showing Karen O float sheepishly underwater in a red dress and matching lipstick, the visuals suit the subtlety of the track beautifully.

The lowdown: The track comes from the frontwoman’s debut solo album Crush Songs, which is due for release on Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records label on 9th September. The track will first be available pre-release as a limited, special vinyl edition, incorporating Karen’s own personal drawings and handwritten lyrics. ‘Crush Songs’ was recorded between 2006 and 2007 and is described as a “collection of lo-fi, bedroom recordings.”
