NOW that we’re immersed in a summer that’s intermittently flicking between glorious sunshine and dismal rain, it’s lucky that we can take solace in the fact that a steady stream of great new music can guide us through. Incorporating bands that you’ll be acquainted with and others that you need to familiarize yourself with as soon as possible, here’s the most riveting tracks of the week that was.
RASCALTON- Lust
Rising from the opening band at last year’s Tenement Trail to now being on the precipice of unleashing their very first AA physical single via new label Public and closing King Tut’s Summer Nights, the Glasgow outfit are firing on all cylinders on new track ‘Lust.’
Delivered alongside a thrilling video that encapsulates the undeterred sense of camaraderie that naturally comes to prominence at any of their shows, this latest offering is an exercise in punk-infused revelry that denotes their ability to depict wild tales of hedonistic chaos with sincerity and authenticity. The product of a musical lineage that contains allusions to everything from the Buzzocks and The Modern Lovers to The Libertines and The Dandy Warhols, this is a band condensing their ethos into just under three minutes of maniacal exuberance and it couldn’t be any better of an indication of where they’re headed.
Saint PHNX– Magic
to take the world by storm once and for all, Glasgow band Saint PHNX have unveiled another massive track by the name of ‘Magic’.
Having rocketed up the Spotify charts with each outstanding release to date, the dynamic duo have laid their colossal sound down once again with truly momentous results. Fuelled by a familiar sense of burning ambition and self-belief, the band draw from personal strength to create one of their most hard-hitting tracks to date; a rousing piece of anthemic rock which begs for national airplay.
Opening in rather brooding fashion, it doesn’t take long for the track to explode to life with the kind of titanic chorus we’ve come to know and love from the duo. Boasting an innate ability for engaging and anthemic songwriting, ‘Magic’ swells with thunderous rhythms, vast soundscapes and a formidable lead vocal from Stevie Jukes.
Alvvays- Dreams Tonite
Three years on from their emphatic arrival and we’re ready to swoon over Alvvays’tales of longing and blissful idealism once again when their sophomore effort Antisocialites makes its way to our ears next month.
The second single to be taken from the record, the band have now unveiled the shimmering ‘Dreams Tonite’ and it encapsulates exactly what they do so well. Emulating the unrequited yet unique love stories that have long been a staple of bands ranging from The Smiths to Camera Obscura and Cocteau Twins, their dreamy sound continues to expand and shift and now contains allusions towards the more spacious, shoegaze-inspired side of the spectrum in its brooding guitars.
Viva Ze Bool- Glamorous
Hailing from Dundee, we’re esctatic to welcome the elusive Viva Ze Bool to the line-up of this year’s Tenement Trail. Enveloped in an air mystery and yet displaying unrepentant vibrancy in their sound, their first single ‘Glamorous’ harbours a great deal of aspiration in the likelihood s of its highly addictive chorus being lovingly bellowed back at them and inspirational to the listeners due to its resiliently positive message. Brimming with celestial synths and upbeat vocals, this is an artist that you need to keep within your sights.
Radiophonic Tuckshop- Running Commentary EP
Set to be launched with a launch show at Glasgow’s Hug and Pint on Sunday, the debut EP from Radiophonic Tuckshop is one that shouldn’t be overlooked. Unorthodox, and vivid 60’s inspired pop that is indebted to forbearers such as Stevie Marriot’s Small Faces, Badfinger and The Move, their consummate musicianship and extensive knowledge of the often cruel sparring partner that is songwriting is enviable and a credit to Last Night From Glasgow’s impressive roster.
