EARLIER this year Gengahr announced themselves as major players with their debut album A Dream Outside. The London four-piece have now went a dropped a surprise new EP titled Tired Eyes, featuring three previously unreleased songs.
The tracks were recorded during sessions for the album, but never made the cut. Now the band have revisited the songs, and after working with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, The War On Drugs, Animal Collective) on the lead single ‘Tired Eyes’, the EP was born.
On working with the producer frontman Felix Bushe said: “We have been huge admirers of Nicholas Vernhes and all the incredible records he has produced and recorded. It was a real dream come true to find that he was a fan of what we were doing and be given the opportunity to work together and a song of ours.”
The song itself is a twisting, semi-psychedelic piece with confused and cryptic lyrics which gives the feel of tired resignation. It is a live favourite and it’s easy to see why, with it’s simplicity and chugging momentum.
Following this are two other brand new tracks ‘Fade to Black’ and ‘Loki’. The first is a subdued number that bursts into a huge, fleeting pop chorus. ‘Loki’, just like it’s wily namesake, plays an amazing trick, making a minimalist song sound huge and complex.
The EP is a great follow-up to what was already a hugely impressive debut. Let’s hope they haven’t used up all their creativity and a second album can maintain this high standard.
The band are set to embark on an expansive UK tour which will feature a date in Glasgow at King Tuts on the 19th October. The EP is out now and you can get a taster of it here with the song ‘Tired Eyes’.
