LAST month, we introduced you to new Glasgow outfit Humour who shared their debut single ‘yeah, mud!’.

Formed during lockdown, the band have crafted a sound that is disorientating yet immediate and endlessly compelling. Pulling together fragments of off-kilter post-punk, erratic indie-pop and discordant post-hardcore, their music is built around the unhinged vocal of Andreas Christodoulidis – their intention being, not to tell the listener something profound, but to paint a picture and ignite their imagination.

Despite only being in their very formative stages, their early gigs have incited genuine pandemonium – and we’re delighted to welcome them to our very own Tenement Trail on Saturday 8th October.

Ahead of that though, they’ve announced their debut EP ‘Pure Misery’ on the prolific So Young Records, slated for release on 25th November – as well as the incendiary ‘alive and well’. With their frontman in particular chaotic form, he evokes feelings of abandon over wiry guitars, before it explodes with gang vocals and an unyielding energy. Listen in below.

On the week of the new single’s arrival, we catch up with them about Tenement Trail, their inspirations and ambitions.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOU AND HOW DID YOU START?

Humour started during the lockdowns of 2020. We live in a flat together and used that unlimited spare time to write as many songs as we could. We built a recording booth in our living room out of wood from B & Q so that we could produce some demos of what we were making while we waited for live music to start up again.

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

Our influences are quite varied. In terms of the music, we’ve ripped off quite a number of people including Yves Tumor, Ought, Title Fight and others. We’ve taken inspiration from the lyrics and vocal style of singers like Kurt Vile and Aldous Harding for their surrealness and silliness. Ideas for the lyrics often come from books, news stories and films.

ANY SCOTTISH ARTISTS YOU LOVE/ ARE INFLUENCED BY?

We are big fans of Theo Bleak, Vlure, Walt Disco and Cheap Teeth to name a few. They are lovely people too.

WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS AS AN ARTIST?

Mainly just to make enough money to keep making music and playing it for as long as possible. We’d love to do a tour in Europe and America too.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR SET AT TENEMENT TRAIL?

Lots of sweat and lots of bad words. We are gonna play a bunch of new tunes too which we’re excited for.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FESTIVAL MEMORY?

Playing Tenement Trail will definitely be a highlight. Playing Stag and Dagger this year was also a lot of fun, especially sharing a bill with Protomartyr who are a favourite of ours.

WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT COMING UP?

We’ve just announced our debut EP, Pure Misery, to be released in November on SoYoung Records. We’re gonna announce a small run of UK dates around that and will also be making our debut in Europe which we’re buzzing for. Lots of exciting stuff coming up, keep your eyes peeled.
