IN the latest and final edition of our Tenement Trail Radar Spotlight series, we catch up with the inimitable Tina Sandwich.

Returning to Tenement Trail for a second year running, the rising star shot onto our radar in 2022 when she beat off hundreds of competitors to win our Trail/Belladrum competition, securing a well-earned slot at both festivals. Bursting onto the stage full of star power and rock and roll charisma, the frontwoman certainly made an impact – and her and her band will hope to repeat the same feat this weekend when they take on St Luke’s.

With three singles now to her name – ‘Sick Girl’, ‘Fast Cars (and Movie Stars)’, and ‘Up All Night’ – expect to hear plenty of pop-punk influences, instantly addictive choruses and hooks galore.

An act you don’t want to miss this weekend, find out more about Tina Sandwich below.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOU AND HOW DID YOU START?

I’ve always been fascinated by music and the subcultures around them. So from a young age I’d corral whoever my 4 best friends were at the time and form a “band”. Most of the time we were just sitting in the community centre with pick n mixes, trying to figure out which of our Foo Fighters covers to play at a cool older brother’s birthday party.

WHO ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY?

The Slits, Siouxie Sioux, Breeders. A lot of the 4AD roster actually.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST MOMENT AS A BAND SO FAR?

In terms of scale, probs opening the main stage at Belladrum, thanks to your good selves at TTV! Also selling out our debut headline with some of the best bands about just now, Milange and Soapbox. We played a cover of Sabotage –  Beastie Boys as a big super-group. SandWangeBox ???

WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS AS AN ARTIST?

To make the absolute best most perfect song ever and win a Grammy. Jk! Dunno really, I suppose the thing I enjoy most about live music is the sense of community. To create a really fun gang for everyone to join.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR SET AT TENEMENT TRAIL?

Let’s just say, they don’t call me Mr Bombastic for nothing.

WHAT ACTS DO YOU WANT TO SEE ON THE DAY?

Walt Disco for sure. SoapBoax, Bottle Rockets, Junk Pups and Big Girls Blouse!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FESTIVAL MEMORY?

That’s a toughie. To be honest, the girls and I had the best time running around feral at Tenement Trail last year. I barely remember who we saw. Lots of tassels and red lipstick though.

WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT COMING UP

A Krackin’ wee hometown headline at Krakatoa Aberdeen, 27th October. The lovely lot at SMC are putting it on. Very much looking forward to haunting the halls of the bar me and a couple of my band used to work in.

Plus a few secrets coming up to the new year. Kiss kiss!
