AT TTV, we’re all about unearthing exciting new bands and artists and bringing them straight to your playlists. In our new RADAR SPOTLIGHT feature, we’ll be shining a light on the artists that are exciting us the most – they may only be in the very formative stage of their careers, but we want you to know about them – before they hit the big time.

In our first RADAR SPOTLIGHT of the year, we catch up with Glasgow-based outfit Uninvited. Formed during lockdown through chance meetings on public transport and Instagram, the four-piece were fuelled by a desire to become the change they wanted to see, writing songs that brought the LGBTQ+ conversation to the forefront and challenging traditional tropes of indie music, while putting their own indelible stamp on the genre.

Signed to 7 West Music shortly after their formation, they’ve already caused quite a stir in the local scene and beyond – and with only two singles to their name. Both bursting with energy and refreshing enthusiasm., ‘Diet Cigarette’ and ‘Tomboy’ showcase an innate skill for crafting big pop hooks with impeccable harmonies and rousing guitars leads.

At the end of this week, they’re set to release their new single ‘Behind the Black Door’ on 21st January. They’ve described it as one “for the girls, boys, theys, queer folk, poc/woc and everyone inbetween, anyone who is just tired and worn out by the government’s incompetence”.

Set to mark another exciting chapter in story to date, we wanted to find out more about how they started, their influences and their dreams for the year ahead.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR BAND / HOW DID YOU START?

“Uninvited are a four-piece band based in Glasgow, with Gill and Taylor on vocals, guitar and bass; Bex our lead guitarist and Fiorenza on the drums. Taylor and Gill first met through gigging together in Dundee, then came into contact with Bex through a group chat and decided together they wanted to start a band. Bex lived in the same area as Fiorenza and they would always see each other at the train station, and then in August of 2020, Fiorenza got a dm from Bex asking if she wanted to join their new band and here we are today. The music we create is mainly indie rock with influences from the likes of the 1975, Radiohead and Haim. No one has ever asked about out band name but the inspiration for it comes from an Australian artist called Mallrat, I’m a big fan and wanted to pay homage to to her!” (Taylor)

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

“We all individually draw influences from different places and types of music. For example, when it comes to guitar parts and lyrics, I (Gill) always get ideas from whatever band I’m currently fixated on. Some current bands that influence us at the moment are Wolf Alice, Dream Wife and Thyla. In the past we have been influenced by musicians such as Haim (who still play a big part in our songwriting), The 1975 and Nasty Cherry.” (Gill)

ANY SCOTTISH BANDS YOU LOVE/ARE INFLUENCED BY?

“If you know us then you’ll know that we are obsessed with The Ninth Wave. We recently got to see them at their show at the Oran Mor and have not stopped talking about it, plus they are such lovely people. We also love Lucia and the Best Boys who are doing amazing things, putting Scotland on the map. Of course, not to mention the likes of Baby Strange, Brat Coven and SHE. Scotland is oozing with fresh sounds at the moment, it’s so refreshing to see.” (Gill)

WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS AS A BAND?

“We’d love to be able to pursue music full-time, and quit our boring day jobs. Also, we want to be the musicians that we needed growing up. Having non-male representation in music is really important to show people that despite the scene being purely male-dominated, there’s room for people like us & they shouldn’t shy away from being a musician.” (Bex)

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT COMING UP?

2022 is a big year for us, we’re constantly growing as musicians and our writing and playing is getting even better. We’re taking Uninvited to the next level in 2022 by supporting our favourite artists across the UK, which we are all very excited about. Our new single ‘Behind The Black Door’ is out this week (21st Jan) so follow our instagram for announcements. (Bex)
