SUPPORTING Palma Violets and getting shoved into the Stone Roses pigeon hole, London’s Childhood have broken free from any genre placing with their melodic guitar infused sound that is inspired from a vast taste in music from the talented four piece.

“Our name basically came from Ben and Leo going out and getting too fucked on drugs essentially and chatting shit about band names for hours.

It’s exciting just talking about possible things we can do musically.

“Ben said to Leo do you want to be in a band called Childhood and Leo said ‘yes I do’. It came from sitting in a room doing nothing productive!”

After going through approximately six drummers, the final line-up for Childhood consists of Ben, Leo, Daniel and the final piece of the puzzle, Jonny: “We first played Electric together with the final line-up which was a great gig. Baby Strange played with us too.

“This is the line-up forever.”

“We played Glasgow with Palma Violets in Stereo, it was a good gig. It was really dingy which is always good. And the promoter made us some homemade curry, which was all made out of lentils which was quite unique.”

The band have just secured album sessions in the diary with a plan to release their debut in the new year: “It will come out in February at the latest. We are almost all there.

“There are a couple more we need to get done. I would say it’s 75% done.

“We have some major plans. We have some exciting things up our sleeves for the album release. Expect more than just an normal, standard album release. It’s gonna be good. That’s all we’re saying.”

With Stone Roses influences definitely present, the band have managed to capture a whole host of others into their sound. Pals of the band, Only Real are also prominent in the guitar pieces that the band say have inspired Only Real and not the other way around: “Only Real has been my best friend for about eleven years. He stole the guitar parts from us. Honest!

“We all listen to shit loads of music, we all listen to so much different stuff. We don’t just want to fit into one thing.

“We don’t want to sound pretentious when we say this but we sound really unique. We just want to incorporate all our likes into our sound.”

Playing Benicassim festival in the summer, the band have had a taste of what it feels like to be amongst the greats on a festival bill: “We played Beni on the Saturday. We played the Pringles Stage so we got loads of free Pringles which was great.

“The line-up is always a bit mad. We liked it.”

And what’s next for Childhood as they ready to release their debut? “What’s exciting me is the freedom to construct our musical fusions at the moment, says Ben. “You can do so many things like make singles, albums and go through the motions.

“We are getting a lot of support which allows us to be in the position to think about what you want to do that’s maybe a little bit different.

“It’s exciting just talking about possible things we can do musically.”

Childhood will play Leicester’s O2 Academy on 18th October.
