B Muff in space

FUZZKILL are killing it in the local scene. Owner, operator and musical master Ross Keppie likes to fuck shit up and so do his bands. A recent addition to the independent label, Breakfast Muff join the likes of Catholic Action and DEATHCATS (RIP). It could be said, this band are different. They have an sensationalist passion for Huevos Rancheros and they want to make you feel things; in this recent TTV TALKS we’re introducing Breakfast Muff.

“We’ve joined Fuzzkill by basically continually getting drunk with Ross Keppie. We were in separate bands but knew each other through gigs n stuff. Eilidh and Simone were in Breakfast Muff first with another person before they played any gigs, but that person dropped out just before their first gig and I was drafted in the day before the first gig and we wrote eight of the songs on our first album.”

We all went to tons of gigs and stuff when we were younger, didn’t really think we’d ever be in a band or anything like that, but two of us (Eilidh and Simone) met via a Green Door course and formed the first band and stayed together through that band’s break up then went into Breakfast Muff. I (Cal) just really enjoyed gigs and thought “I wonder if I could do that…”

Breakfast Muff joined a massive chunk of names revealed as the bands showcasing at this year’s XpoNorth. Proof, that once again Scotland’s scene is flourishing. “The scene is really, really good, tons of great stuff going on, it would be good to see a little more diversity to be honest – but that doesn’t mean it’s not great!

“Sharptooth, Smack Wizards, Vital Idles, Happy Meals, Joyce Delany, Sacred Paws, Blood of the Bull. Also one of our favourite Glasgow labels, Number 4 Door, run by one of our favourite people, who put out our first album when no one cared, Gus Stephens!

At this stage, we don’t even know what’s happening tomorrow… Maybe tour and put out lots of music… Might be dead in 5 years… Fuck… Just try not to worry too much.”

Getting inside the record collection of a band is a way to feel your way through a TTV introduction, the band explain: “Two of us have recently been in Ghana, so not really been listening to physical records – but we’ve been listening to live traditional music in the Volta Region, also loads of highlife. Big up Tafi Cultural Institute!!! Also Moldy Peaches till death.”

With an eclectic taste the band explain their desert island discs: “Eilidh’s is ‘Remember That I Love You’ by Kimya Dawson, Simone’s is ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ by The Flaming Lips and Cal’s is ‘Purity Ball’ by Dirty Summer.

In a nutshell? “We basically feel like you can do things – whether that’s starting a band or to wake up feeling not shit about yourself – just to make ya feel good!

“We’re happy with what we’ve done I guess, none of us could even play drums when we started haha… so pretty pleased about how it’s turned out – mainly just glad people like it!”

And in three words? “Lame-os who try. Huevos rancheros 4 life!”
