THE 1975 aren’t only famous for leopard print drum heads and a song called Chocolate. The four-piece indie outfit have just the right amount of off-the-record-charm to pass them off as anything but manufactured. Aside from the aesthetics, the new band on the scene are famous for their sound. Lead vocalist Matthew Healy has a wonderful tone to his voice that stands out on tracks The City and Sex. So wonderful in fact, that the band have become a radio sensation this year  have just completed their debut at festivals such as T in the Park and Glastonbury.

Tenement TV catch up with the band backstage at Glasgow’s Òran Mór before their sold-out, only Scottish date on their headline tour.

Fresh off the tour bus from Nottingham, the band have just tweeted that last night at Dot to Dot festival was the best gig of their life. So its no surprise that their voices are ropey and hair a little dishevelled. This said, the band couldn’t be happier to be in Glasgow and speak with TTV like old pals sharing a pint: “We have had an amazing experience so far. It’s all very new to us.

“I think Glasgow is going to be mad, we can’t wait to play to the Glasgow crowd. It’s our only Scottish date so we imagine it’s going to be a good one.”

Tenement TV watched the band while at Live at Leeds! back in May when they played the infamous Cockpit: “We love small venues. I love Rock City in Nottingham, The Ritz in Manchester and King Tuts in Glasgow.

“We have played The Cockpit in Leeds a thousand times and we love it there. The bigger we get the better playing smaller venues is.”

“But our album is our album, its our thriller.”

Tenement TV ask the guys about how they feel single Chocolate is included on the Now (that’s what I call music) CD alongside The Lumineers: “I can’t believe its on The Now CD! Are you for real? We were talking about that a few weeks ago, saying it would be cool if it were included on something like that.

“That’s awesome. Chocolate is a very personal song, we are just really humbled it has been so well received. We didn’t expect any of this to be honest. We just wrote some tunes, and that was it.”

The band have released three LP’s and experienced great success with a song from each- Chocolate, Sex and The City. The band’s debut album is due for release this summer and they cant wait for people to hear their signature sound: “It’s a fifteen track album and it will include one single from each EP. There’s eleven new songs.

“The EP’s were us venting our leftfield creative side, so some of the tracks on the LP’s are on the LP’s rather than the album as we felt they wouldn’t have been as commercially accepted.

“But our album is our album, its our thriller.”

Six months ago, The 1975 were still getting to grips with the positive response their playing had. Today, they are in a whirlwind of extensive touring and crazy fans: “I am a bit perplexed by the whole thing. I am trying to keep my head together. My reality has changed dramatically in the last six months.

“We are playing festivals we used to go to when we were kids. You don’t even have to think about how it must feel if you were faced with the prospect that has come become our reality. It’s really amazing.”

With a wealth of new music hitting the scene, The 1975 find that they are way to busy to keep up: “New music? We aren’t really a band’s band. We like r ‘n’ b and dance music. We love Kodaline, Dog is Dead and Swim Deep.

“They are all our mates and all equally amazing.”
