No strangers to the Glasgow stage, The Temperance Movement returned to their beloved city once again, opening the TRNSMT Main Stage ahead of huge day of rock n roll icons. We caught up with frontman Phil Campbell after their set for a chat.

Festival veterans The Temperance Movement have touched down in many fields over the year, Phil was reminiscent about their earliest festival memories and roughing it in campsites.

“Probably Wickerman, that was our first festival as a band, and T in the Park, everyone has great memories of that, even if you got swamped you still have a great time, you don’t need a shower you just get on with it.”

TRNSMT on Glasgow Green, it’s about the festival being in Glasgow, all the people being here and that is what makes it great.”

TRNSMT is just one of many the festivals the boys are playing this summer, with a very hectic month up ahead. The travelling remains one of Phil’s favourite things about being in a band.

“We are doing one in Belgium, one in France, one in Germany with unpronounceable names, and we are dotting about with Deep Purple, just been to Montreux Jazz Festival, then we are going to Verona, Turin and Finland before the month is out. After a while you have to stop yourself and think to yourself whoa, I’m getting a bit too used to this but I’m in Verona now let’s go and have a look.”

However, despite travelling the world, The Temperance Movement are yet to brush up on their language skills.

“When you’re in a band you just pure burst about talking English to everybody, and for some reason they just sort of go ‘Aye, whatever.

Earlier this year, The Temperance Movement released their latest record A Deeper Cut, with a huge amount of hard work really paying off in the eyes of the band.

“The response has been really good, it got a good chart position, we got to number six, and it was six months of hard work getting it out and getting it released and it worked out well for us. We are already writing trying to get another album out, I consciously get things started and we always have a backlog of stuff.”

The band’s creativity stems solely from their love of music, and Phil gave us an insight into the drives, and sometimes blocks to his creativity.

“I’m always driven by the same stuff, I love music. I love Led Zeppelin, I love The Faces, and watching documentaries about The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, that just totally vibes me right up, it just takes away all the clutter. I just love music. I think you get stifled by going long periods of time not doing anything and just touring too much, you can find yourself not enjoying it.”

As for bands starting now…

“Keep yourselves together, take care of each other, don’t drink and don’t take drugs. I know that’s a bit old of me to say that but get the work done, stay focussed and do what you’re going to do, do your thing. Don’t expect you’re going to be famous because of some manager or label, it’s all changed, you HAVE to make it happen yourself.”
