FIB Benicàssim is the jewel in Europe’s summer festival crown, all thanks to the guaranteed sunshine, world-class line-ups, sandy beaches and all-night parties. One of the most established events in the festival calendar and currently voted Best Overseas Festival (UK Festival Awards), this years’ headlining talent are The Killers, Queens of The Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys. Kaiser Chiefs, Dizzee Rascal, The Courteeners, Hurts, Deap Valley, Jake Bugg and Azealia Banks, alongside a host of other talent. Festival-goers seeking world class live acts without the mud-bath can trade in the wellies and waterproofs for beachwear at this coastal gem. Benicàssim is much more than just a music festival; over 100 acts perform on four different stages with eight days free camping. FIB is beach by day, music by night.

Situated on the sun-drenched coast between Barcelona and Valencia, this tiny port town on the Costa del Azahar morphs into a hotbed of indie-electronica for four scorching days. Even the bands themselves are in mutual agreement that one of the festival’s main selling points is the guaranteed glorious sunshine. Acts and artists who have performed include Bob Dylan, Blur, The Strokes, Radiohead, Oasis, Kings of Leon, Leonard Cohen, Hot Chip, The Prodigy, New Order, The Stone Roses, David Guetta and Kasabian. Arcade Fire said, ‘We really love playing in Spain…it’s nice when its hot in the summer not cold and wet like England’.

Popular with UK and Irish festival crowds who want to see their favourite international acts without the rain and the mud, easily accessible Benicàssim also attracts visitors from across Europe and the USA. The sheer heat of the Spanish midsummer makes Benicàssim a mostly nocturnal affair — the first live acts appearing at around 6pm, finishing at daybreak the next day. Headline acts play the main stage at around midnight and the dance arena continues until around 6am. By midnight, the entire site is a wild party, music blaring from every stage with smaller party tents and all-night bars scattered around the festival site. Those who aren’t dancing can soak up the atmosphere as they watch giant screens showing the performances. After the main stage acts have finished, the music continues on until the early hours.

By day, after a few hours sleep, festival-goers head to the Benicàssim beaches to soak up the sun and relax. There are a variety of beach bars and cafes to choose from and great local restaurants serving delicious tapas and great Spanish wines for a pre-festival dinner. Prior to the music festival, the pretty resort town had attracted tourists as a European break. Now in its nineteenth year, Benicàssim is a world-class festival festival experience combined with sunshine beach vacation. As the three campsites open three days prior to the entertainment, many of the overseas revellers arrive early to extend their break into a summer holiday. Visitors who make a summer holiday out of their stay can make the most of the eight days of free camping. Meanwhile, those seeking creature comforts will find an assortment of good mid-priced hotels. In addition to self-catering apartments and villas, Hotels’ Canada, Bulevard and Tramontana are located in Benicàssim itself and there are many other accommodation options within easy reach and regular shuttle buses to and from the festival.
