THE Flaming Lips will return to Merseyside for the first time in 15 years after being announced as the second headliner for Liverpool Sound City 2015.
The Oklahoma experimentalists will headline the Saturday night, with Belle and Sebastian closing on the Sunday. This year’s festival will be the first at its new Bramley Moore Dock location.
Famed for their elaborate live shows which feature everything from balloons and video projections to frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature space bubble, the Lips are regularly cited as one of the great live rock acts of the past 30 years.
The return to the city coincides with the release of the bands last LP, With A Little Help from my Fwends – a track for track tribute to The Beatles legendary Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album which featured contributions from the likes of My Morning Jacket, Moby and Miley Cyrus.
Coyne spoke of his fondness of the city and The Beatles influence, saying: “We are lucky to have a “place” associated with our identity. We hail from Oklahoma City and even though I’ve lived there my whole life, and the band has always been from there, we are probably more influenced by the city of Liverpool because of the Beatles and our curiosity about their life.”
Sound City runs between 22-24th May and tickets can be purchased via here.
