RECORD Store Day 2014 kicks-off today, Saturday 19th April, in record stores around the UK. Stores will celebrate independent record shops with limited edition, special and one-off releases on sale exclusively in record stores from a vast selection of iconic and breakthrough acts. Then there’s the list of special free performances going on up and down the country that will ensure Record Store Day 2014 is one to remember.
The official Record Store Day website states a Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail and whose company is not publicly owned. In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores-not online retailers or large corporations- now that’s something work supporting.
Over 200 stores in the UK take part this year, and Glasgow’s Love Music has a packed schedule with acts Fatherson, Stanley Odd, Blood Relatives and Pronto Mama all putting on free performances throughout the day.
Amongst the exclusive releases that Love Music will have on sale is Pictish Trail by Stanley Odd- a new RSD 12 Inch with artwork By Scott Frightened Rabbit, a new CD EP by Pronto Mama, Electric Honey EP by Harry & The Hendersons of which advanced copies are available exclusively for RSD.
Sam from Twin Atlantic (picture) in Love Music’s store with their new Record Store Day 7 inch white vinyl single. The store will have 35 copies for sale first thing Saturday morning. Love Music said: “Keep your eyes peeled for members of Twin Atlantic during the day; they like to buy vinyl here too!”

Edinburgh’s Underground Solu’shn opens its doors at 8 AM with performances kicking off at 2 PM. Local DJ artist Lord of the Isles is on the list of acts set to play live sets in store. The venue are very excited to be offering discounts and giveaways throughout the day, so get down nice and early and soak in the buzz. Check out their website for more details.
CODA Music in Edinburgh are setting the bar high, offering free bacon rolls to the first 50 customers. Opening their doors at 9 AM, the store will have live performances from local acts including Edinburgh-based folk-blues band King Eider- a talented five-piece who create a modern acoustic sound using traditional musicianship.
An exclusive debut 7’’ vinyl from Fin-Ray titled Blue Winter is amongst the exclusive releases for RSD. Fin-Ray have been described as psych country punk. Think The Magic Band, The Birthday Party and The Cramps all being brought up on a healthy dose of Hank Williams. Check out their website for more details.
