thebeatlespennylaneA STUDIO recording of The Beatles hit ‘Penny Lane’ has uncovered that the trumpet solo that made the song so memorable was missing.

The archaeology of the 1967 hit is being sold at auction, originally recorded for the record label EMI.

It is believed that the original version was about to be released until Paul McCartney watched a BBC show of a Bach concert and heard a solo played on a piccolo trumpet. The band enlisted David Mason to play the trumpet part which was recorded at a studio session in Abbey Road studios.

The track was written by McCartney about a street in Liverpool in response to John Lennon’s ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ which were both released as a double A side.

The rich and dense sound on the track sent it to the number 2 spot in the UK and number 1 in the likes of the USA, Canada, Germany and Australia.
