AFTER their performance at Glastonbury, this date has been circled in the diary for a while. Sept 14th, Austin psych rockers The Black Angels roll into Glasgow to play the Classic Grand, and after the last two Glasgow gigs at contemporary venue SWG13 and the rustic Captains Rest, this venue offers an idyllic setting, with plenty elevated platforms for the packed crowd to get the best view of the band.

The projectors start up as the band take to the stage, putting a massive psychedelic imagine on the back drop. The backdrop changes throughout the set, drawing you into the performance visually and when the music starts with opener Mission District, you’re caught and sucked into the mesmerising performance.

The Black Angels continue to have you in the palm of your hand, rolling out tracks Don’t Play with Guns, Entrance Song, Broken Soldier, Bad Vibrations and Podigal Son,

Evil Things closes for the encore and up until this point the gig is almost perfect- the sound could have been louder but predictably, this is no reflection on The Black Angels.

There’s no chat in between songs, it’s all about the music and that’s what everyone in the Classic Grand this evening, want. A rapturous encore proceeds with You’re Mine, You on the Run and Black Isn’t Black.

Saturday night proved that The Black Angels are one of the most eye opening acts on the planet.
