BEMZ has made a triumphant return with the exceptional ‘Nova’s Dad’ EP.
Framed around his relationship to his young daughter while offering meditations on the importance of family, home and self-acceptance, the eight-track EP – which also features popular songs such as ‘Zidane’ and ‘Raging Bull’ – reiterates the sense of honesty and vulnerability within his heartfelt wordplay that listeners have come to appreciate from the rapper. And it marks a significant step forward, too – both in terms of lyricism and production. Each track tells a story and gives us a generous insight into his world – whether it’s jostling with the concepts of power and success on the Washington-assisted ‘Snowfall’, the balance of ambition and reflection on the poignant ‘We Move’, the vulnerable honesty about a lost relationship on ‘Sweetest Girl’ or the bouncy, summer-ready ‘Zidane’. And when set against the smooth, carefully layered production, it lends a real sincerity and accomplished feel to the whole narrative.
By his own admission, ‘Nova’s Dad’ is the summation of two years of hard work – and it’s undoubtedly his most ambitious and complete piece of work to date. It’s the sound of an artist reaching new emotional heights.
2022 saw Bemz reach incredible heights, winning the BBC Scottish Act Of The Year and joining iconic festival lineups across the UK such as Reading & Leeds, TRNSMT and Riverside, with no sign of slowing down for what is set to be another successful year in 2023.
As well as summer slots at Otherland’s Festival and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Dundee, Bemz sets off on a UK tour in April with performances in London, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, concluded by his biggest headline show to date – Glasgow’s SWG3 on the 28th.
