david bowieLEAVING this world to an outpouring of respect and adoration with his final album Blackstar, many thought that we’d heard the last ever David Bowie song in the form of the thought-provoking ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’ that brought the album to its conclusion.

As apt as that may be, it’s since became clear that the chameleonic musician that always kept us guessing has a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Taken from the cast album for the upcoming musical Lazarus which was completed prior to his death, David Bowie’s ‘When I Met You’ was debuted last night on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Much more traditional in its instrumentation than the vast majority of Blackstar, this new track is driven forward by a forceful guitar rhythm whilst the urgency which defined his vocals in his twilight years remains as potent as ever. Slowly descending into a ramshackle number which sees Bowie detail what was a turning point in his (or at least the protagonist’s) life with all-consuming fervour, it’s wonderful to hear that he was still capable of exerting himself for his art when he was so close to the end.

The Lazarus Cast Album will be released this Friday (21st October).
