DIIV have managed to turn themselves into an almost mythical presence in modern music, largely due to the long and agonising wait that they’ve inflicted upon us between albums.

Despite the fact that it may have dismayed us to see Zachary Cole Smith and his bandmates retreat for such a lengthy period of time, all indications suggest that it’s been beneficial to the band and enabled them to emerge as a re-energised force that are ready to allure us once more.

A distinct departure from the sound of the previously aired ‘Dopamine’ and ‘Bent (Roi’s Song), the band have plunged themselves into the depths of despair with the forlorn yet magnificent ‘Mire (Grant’s Song).

Bursting into life with a much heavier and robust riff than we’ve came to expect from them, ‘Mire (Grant’s Song) sees their atypical sound injected with a snarling and malevolent dose of menace that faintly recalls some of Loveless’s more visceral moments. Filled with gorgeous vocal interplay and unrelenting guitars, this is DIIV at their most aggressive and potent, something which we’ll hopefully hear more of on the corresponding new album.

Diiv’s forthcoming record ‘Is The Is Are’ will be released on the 5th February via Captured Tracks.
