The Band: London based art rock four piece Django Django went on a notable hiatus following the release of their eponymous debut in 2012, abstaining from live performance and studio endeavours alike. Having last graced a stage at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party in 2013; the city where their genesis occurred via a chance meeting at university, the band has returned with a new single and the announcement of initial tour dates for the coming year.
THE SOUND: ‘First Light’ is undoubtedly in the vein of the majority of Django Django’s output thus far; although it features several elements that set it apart from their signature sound. In terms of structure, it is more in line with traditional pop; with sedated falsetto vocals and a meandering synth line. The track’s percussive crescendo delves into familiar territory without sounding like a rehash, utilising elements of afrobeat amongst their distinctive and vaguely psychedelic sound.
THE LOWDOWN: First Light is available now via Because Music on 12” vinyl and digital download. This release has coincided with the announcement of two intimate dates at Leeds’ Wardrobe on February 14th and in their spiritual hometown of Edinburgh at The Liquid Rooms on the 15th.
