SEEMINGLY infatuated with love and its many trails and tribulations, Father John Misty is a songwriter whose off-center slant on the subject seems to appeal to many.
Turning in his most definitive work to date on this year’s I Love You Honeybear, the Los Angeles based artist has continued to explore the concept with the video for ‘The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment’, extending it even further than usual.
The track itself is a atypical of Tillman’s songwriting style, laced with allusions to a bygone era of easy listening in its instrumentation and a great number of witticisms in its lyrics. Focused around his paradoxical feelings towards a lover, it features such hilarious lines as: “She says like literally music is the air she breathes, and the malaprops make me want to fucking scream.”
Its accompanying visuals are equally impressive, utilising the latest advances in technology to allow Misty to interact with himself; extending as far as swimming together and culminating in an unsettling embrace between the two.
I Love You Honeybear is available now via Sub Pop.
