GIVEN the fact that Franz Ferdinand have earned their place as one of the quirkier and more daringly experimental of the mid 2000’s guitar bands, it should come as no surprise that their work with American art rock duo Sparks sees their sounds meld impeccably to create an incredibly entertaining sound.
After a great deal of plaudits were allotted to both of the previously revealed tracks, FFS have continued to impress upon the ironically titled ‘Collaborations Don’t Work.’
Opening with tender guitar strains and nonchalant vocals from Alex Kapranos, the track’s brief introduction is at odds with the orchestral splendour that soon engulfs the track, containing elements of the pomposity of 70’s rockers such as Supertramp.
Taking another unexpected turn, the track reverts to a rudimentary, jazz based drum beat, with Kapranos adopting a croon similar to that of Jim Morrison during The Doors’ storied LA Woman period; before it culminates in a display of virtuosity from pianist Ron Mael.
The manner in which the track veers erratically from one idea to the next ties beautifully into the its title, due to the overwhelming number of ideas which the collaborative band have crammed into just under seven minutes. Contrary to what the title may indicate, this track; and the others that have preceded it, most certainly work and will continue to fuel the intrigue sorrounding their forthcoming album.
Their eponymous debut record will be released on the 8th June 2015 via Domino, whilst those looking to catch the band on tour can do so on the dates listed below.
