THE BAND: One of the biggest acts to emerge from Britain’s ever expanding crop of artists in recent years, Florence + The Machine have blazed a trail through the modern music industry since the release of 2009’s awe inspiring Lungs; an album that gained them the adoration of fans and critics alike. Returning after a long lay off, the band have returned with the blistering ‘Ship To Wreck’, the second track to be taken from their forthcoming third record.
THE SOUND: Stripping back some of the more grandiose elements that are often attributed to their sound in favour of a more direct approach, ‘Ship To Wreck’ strikes an intriguing balance between a indie ditty that The Cure would be proud of and a pining folk ballad; driven by Florence’s adoption of a vocal style similar to that of Joni Mitchell. Accented by intermittent use of glockenspiel and delicate acoustic guitar, the track is indicative of an evolution within the band; removing the more ornate elements in favour of something altogether more ramshackle.
THE VIDEO: Featuring a notably disheveled and unkempt Florence in comparison to her usual appearance, the video chronicles her descent into madness as a tumultuous relationship seizes hold of her every waking moment.
THE LOWDOWN: Their third full length release How Big How Blue How Beautiful will be available from 1st June 2015 via Island Records.
