FOALS
are a group who’ve long been known for their penchant for the grandiose and have possessed something of a dramatic flair in their music ever since Total Life Forever. Interweaving dynamic and awe-inspiring soundscapes with the structures of the standard rock ‘n’ roll track is no small feat, but it’s one that they’ve proved themselves to be capable of time and time again.

Today sees them take this concept a step further by handing the reins over to Clint Mansell, a revered musician and composer who’s known for his work on feature films such as Black Swan, Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler and the film  adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Filth.

Turning his attention to Foals’ uplifting and powerful ‘Give It All’, Mansell has transformed the track we’ve come to know into a sparse and hypnotic opus.

Filled with soaring yet melancholic bursts of piano and the rich vocals of frontman Yannis Philippakis, Mansell’s reinterpetation of this What Went Down standout is something to be marveled at.

An undercurrent of menace and eerieness lingers just underneath the surface for much of its duration before bubbling towards the surface towards its conclusion, however it’s striking that Mansell ensures that the beauty which lays at the original’s epicentre is never tarnished.
