THE upbeat rhythms of an acoustic guitar introduce us to the latest track from Into the Ark; the opening serving as an ultimately deceptive introduction to the layered and smooth production which then takes over. Building on from the success of ‘Right Track’ which they released earlier this year, ‘My Ghost’ is bound to generate further interest in the Welsh duo as easily their best offering to date.
From the moment they are introduced, the power of the song lies in the soulful lead vocals. Defiant in their delivery, the visceral lyrics evoke a stirring narrative of an elusive man on the run. Meanwhile, percussive beats and brooding backing vocals are brought in to great effect, lending smouldering atmospherics and a cinematic effect to the track as the duo play with classic soul influences while simultaneously remaining decidedly fresh and contemporary. The vocals burst on the chorus with an added grit and force, elevating the track while capturing the energy of an old soul singer that belies their young age.
It’s particularly refreshing to see their acoustic arrangements be strengthened in this fashion as they continue to flesh out their songs with a burgeoning sense of musicianship and production. It’s an impressive insight into the kind of music and energy the pair can muster between them, and is surely indicative of a bright future
The track has now been accompanied with a new video which appears to be shot in the dark surroundings of an alley way, allowing the focus to remain on their impassioned performance.
