THE BAND: Having written songs for Sam Smith’s Grammy nominated In The Lonely Hour, Mary J. Blige’s The London Sessions and Disclosure’s number one hit ‘Latch,’ Jimmy Napes (James Napier) has been a secret force in the pop world. Now, with the upcoming release of his own debut EP, Napes is using his song writing talents for his own music career.
THE SOUND: With a great deal of studio experience behind him, it’s no surprise Napes’ ‘Give It Up’ is highly polished. The verse and chorus which are led with minimalistic drums, synth and tuned percussion give the song a spacious feel. That said space makes the chorus that much bigger when it comes, with its falsetto vocals and bass line that would sit comfortably in a soul/r&b track.
THE VIDEO: Directed by Luke Monaghan, who also worked with Sam Smith and Disclosure, the cinematically shot video follows a protagonist as he deals with addiction and the lifestyle that can come with it.
THE LOWDOWN: The debut single ‘Give It Up’ is taken from the upcoming EP The Making of Me;Due for a 9th March release via Method Record. The Making of Me features production from Disclosure and MJ Cole.
