SOUTH London artist KAM-BU has shared a new video as an ode to the Windrush Generation and its descendents.
Fast making a name for himself with his incisive lyrics and choice collaborations, his new track ‘Black On Black’ is an emphatic statement that sees him reach extraordinary new heights.
Over a cinematic production which features soaring strings courtesy of Leon Vynehall, KAM-BU leans into ideas of identity, community and heritage and challenges the titular phrase to transform it into something positive.
He says “This track is an exploration of how the ‘Black on Black’ narrative, which is often perceived as negative, can be flipped on its head to represent black culture in a positive way.”
“Discussing topics such as the teaching of financial literacy, the circulation of wealth and unity within a community. This song was inspired by Fela Kuti and his use of repetition as a sort of sonic marching song on demonstration day, this is what I was aiming for when writing the chorus. ‘Black On Black’ is a track for empowerment, equality and reflection.”
It’s a hard-hitting piece of music that arrives with an equally powerful video.
