SCOTTISH singer-songwriter Kohla has unveiled a dreamy new single called ‘Sweetest Love’.
A far cry from the electronic pop we’ve heard from the artist in the past, this new offering marks the beginning of a new chapter for the singer as reflects on young love over a delicate piano ballad.
Citing inspirations as widespread as Sam Cooke, Etta James, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and FKA Twigs, the minimalist production lends a real intimacy to her sepia-tinged memories.
She says :‘Sweetest Love’ is a nostalgic reflection of my early 20s. My life at that point…I was a little directionless. I was releasing and performing music to not much notice. But I was in love and enjoying the small things – my boyfriend was in a band and I’d spend my weekends watching him perform and having fun in the old bars in Glasgow.
There is a soft naivety to the lyrics – at that age, we weren’t fully grown. But it was also quite a magical time in my life. I wanted to illustrate how beautiful and painful love is, but also honouring that relationship for what it was – ‘I lost myself to you’.
I worked with my creative partner Dave Lloyd from Stillhound to bring out the dreamy textures in production, reminiscent of old Hollywood and vintage cinema such as Audrey Hepburn’s ‘Moon River’, Marilyn Monroe’s ‘I Wanna Be Loved by You’, Mary Costa’s ‘Once Upon a Dream’ and timeless, classical pieces such as ‘Clair De Lune’ by Claude Debussy.”
