FILLED with theatrical flair, passionate vocals and an underlying sense that it’s primary motivation is for two best friends to dabble with any musical whim they may have, the return of The Last Shadow Puppets has been a rollercoaster for all fans to observe.
Reinventing themselves several times throughout the course of the promotional tour, the band’s sophomore effort Everything You’ve Come To Expect may have been their first record in numerous years but it appears that they’ve no intentions to retreat back to their separate careers as of yet.
With the duo of Alex Turner and Miles Kane now rumoured to be releasing a new EP in the near future, the band have released a tremendous cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Is This What You Wanted?’
With Alex Turner’s rich and slightly sardonic croon leading the way, their reinterpretation of the track sees them call upon the Scott Walker inspired baroque pop tropes of their debut album; decked out with resplendent strings, faint organ and sparse percussion. Clearly reveling in the amazing imagery that is conjured up in Cohen’s lyrics, Miles Kane’s presence isn’t truly made known until he supplies an absolutely furious solo as the track reaches its conclusion.
Released alongside an accompanying video, it’s hard to say whether the band are parodying 70’s excess or embracing it by this point as Turner saunters around in a gregarious manner that couldn’t be a further cry from the shy young man that first appeared on our screens in the ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ video but it’s well known that he’s made a habit of evolving in the years that followed.
Although these reports remain unconfirmed, early speculation suggests that the track is set for inclusion on an upcoming new EP entitled The Dream Synopsis which will feature covers and new versions of tracks from their second album.
