IT’S not the most festive song in the world, but Menace Beach’s bizarre attempt for Christmas number one, ‘Holidays are Heavy’ is pretty epic.

Band member Ryan Needham stated in an interview that he wanted to make the chorus sound like Spiritualized, but it came across as Don Williams – “but that’s cool.”  It certainly is intriguing, for the near five minutes of drum bashing, slightly detuning guitar, and vocal wailing.

But if you think the song is peculiar, wait until you feast your eyes on the accompanying music video. It features some psychedelic monochrome shapes that quickly cast into a cat being tossed into a whirlwind of different figures, whether it’s the shape of a cushion or a poppy, it’s all very abstract.

Their label, Too Pure Singles have stuck ‘Holidays Are Heavy’ on a 7” backed with another seasonal song of cheer by another ace Leeds band Cowtown, and can be pre-ordered now. Watch the video below:
