AFTER bursting onto the scene at the start of this year with their mesmerising debut single ‘Black Gloves’, Scottish duo Midnight Ambulance are back with their second offering ‘5 AM’.

While it makes use of the same unconventional rhythm patterns and dark, brooding atmospherics we heard on ‘Black Gloves’, the new track showcases a different side to the outfit. Opening quietly with lead singer Amelia Stokes almost whispering into your ear, ‘5 AM’ gradually unfolds into an intensely stirring piece of music – one driven by a real sense of menace. Amelia’s intimate vocals are set against Fraser Fulton’s ominous instrumental – pounding drums are brought to the forefront and the guitars get heavier and heavier as the track becomes increasingly dramatic. It’s a song that has you gripped from beginning to end.

According to the band, it” describes how lockdown life acted as a skewed mirror to the past, casting up old memories both good and bad”.

Judging from the sheer quality of their first two releases, Midnight Ambulance are an exciting addition to Scotland’s music scene and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
