Lacuna ‘Creature Comforts’
Lacuna have made a quickfire return with the release of their new single ‘Creature Comforts’. Released on Mothers Day, it’s an ode to the bonds of motherhood and the changing seasons – set against a bed of hazy folk-rock, yearning strings and warming melodies. Imbued with nostalgia and heartfelt introspection, it’s a gorgeous return that not only marks the return of brighter days, but also an exciting new chapter for the talented outfit.
No Windows ‘Easter Island’
Edinburgh duo No Windows have shared a poignant new single titled “Easter Island”. The track follows the recent announcement of their much-anticipated new EP The Great Traitor – a project that will see them expand their sonic influences even further, leaving the more familiar indie traits behind in favour of lush, psychedelic arrangements that take their cues from 70s chamber pop (George Harrison, Leonard Cohen) and film score composer Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).
The new single “Easter Island” marks the first track the band have written to be sung as a duet from start to finish, and is emblematic of how much Morgan and Verity’s creative relationship has grown over the past years. The emotive and intricate acoustic EP closer sees mellifluous fingerpicking weave around the duos simultaneous vocal lines, with subtle piano, Vibraphone, and tape loop ambience floating in and out of the track.
Speaking on the track, Morgan says, “Easter Island may be the most collaborative song we’ve written, there was almost no separation between both of our roles in that moment. Usually, our instinct after finishing on a song’s spine is to think about arrangement, instrumentation, and production. The works. However, after finishing up Easter Island, we felt perfectly content with where it was. The song remains almost the same as when we played it in my room for the first time.”
“It was written at the end of the relationship that inspired so much of this EP, I have written so many breakup songs and this one shows my maturity in being able to take a gentler and more nuanced approach on the situation,” Verity continues. “As Morgan said, I cannot separate our roles in this song, I felt very unrooted while writing it, and the collaborative element signifies to me the most constant thing in my life, music and me and Morgan’s relationship.”
Nikhita ‘Solace’
Edinburgh-based Nikhita has today shared her debut EP ‘Solace’. Featuring previously hear ‘Lake Karachay’ and ‘Insurance’, the singer-songwriter blends neo-soul influences with hazy R&B soundscapes to create a sound that is both intimate and radiant – her ethereal vocals taking centre stage against carefully crafted, minimalist backdrops. Marking the arrival of a truly unique and distinct voice, it’s a moving and emotionally resonant debut that points to an exciting future ahead.
Talking about the EP, Nikhita says “writing these songs was a place of solace for me, helping me navigate some challenging situations – and solace is what I hope others will find upon listening. I have always thought of music as being an avenue for healing, and recently I’ve been learning more about how intensify that effect sonically, in traditional ways, linked to my heritage. I play singing bowls on a few tracks – these instruments originate from the Himalayas and produce a set of overtones, creating vibrations which can aid in our meditative process and regulation of the nervous system. I am only just beginning my sound healing journey, and there is so much more I am eager to learn about using frequencies for healing”.
Paque ‘CIRCUS’
Last week, Paque dropped an emphatic new single called ‘CIRCUS’. Known for raw, grime-adjacent sound that channels the likes of Giggs, the new single is an ambitious statement of intent – one that explores his own personal journey, from feeling undervalued at the start of his career to pushing boundaries in Scotland’s nascent yet ever-evolving hip hop scene. A bold return, it’s full of energy and confidence.
Rebecca Vasmant ‘Sun Song’
DJ and producer Rebecca Vasmant has today released ‘Sun Song’ featuring Emilie Boyd via New Soil x Women in Jazz – the third to be taken from forthcoming single ‘Who We Are, Becoming’ out 9th May. It’s a beautifully uplifting, serenely euphoric number, and a reminder of the quiet power in the moments and connections that sustain us. Co-written with long-time collaborator Emilie Boyd while she was newly pregnant, it’s a gently uplifting reflection on love, gratitude and the beauty of togetherness. Now sung by Boyd to her baby son, the track has taken on even deeper meaning. “The sun makes us change our mood. It keeps everything alive,” says Vasmant. “This track is the sound of being in love—with life, with people, with the world around us.
Merpire ‘Bigger’
MERPIRE aka Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt today announces her forthcoming second album MILK POOL, slated for release on 4 July. Along with the announcement, she’s shared ‘Bigger’: an electrifying ode to those tentative moments before a first kiss, and that beautiful-yet-naïve feeling when it finally happens that your whole world just changed. True to its name, ‘Bigger’s tight 3-min run time builds from a nostalgic cassette sample, heartfelt indie verses and a blush-inducing surf-rock-inspired chorus, ultimately giving way to head-thrashing guitar/synth lines with all the spike, sparkle and spunk of late 00/early 10s alt-pop. She’s described it as ‘the most exciting’ song on the new record.
Djo ‘Potion’
Djo, aka Joe Keery, has shared his debut album ‘The Crux’ today. Ahead of its release, he shared one final preview single in ‘Potion’.In rather stark contrast to the fizzy LCD Soundsystem stylings of the album’s lead single ‘Basic Being Basic’, and the tranquilized, soft-focus indie sounds of its follow-up ‘Delete Ya’, new cut ‘Potion’ finds Djo in Laurel Canyon mode. It’s a song that he hopes feels a bit like “if Harry Nilsson and Lindsey Buckingham had a baby.” It sees Joe front and centre, falsetto vocal and finger-picked acoustic guitar – it’s a very introspective one.
