APPROACHING harrowing or upsetting periods in life through art is a staple of any medium but few topics are as uncomfortable and distressing as the loss of a child.
Associated with an aching, incomprehensible sadness, it’s the kind of effect that could leave you paralysed, creatively stunted or staring your own mortality in the face as though it were the welcome embrace of a loved one.
Therefore, it’s absolutely remarkable that Nick Cave has chosen to utilise his new record Skeleton Tree as a vessel to discuss and attempt to come to terms with the loss of his 15 year old son Arthur earlier this year.
An album which aches with heartbreak but allows beauty to peer through the shadows, Nick Cave has released a poignant new video for highlight ‘I Need You.’
Perhaps as despondent and laid bare as we’ve ever heard Cave on record, ‘I Need You’ sees the Australian singer/songwriter candidly express his many spiralling emotions surrounding this tragic event over a sparse musical arrangement with jazzy undertones.
Skeleton Tree is available now.
