PAUL MC

The band: Although a household name, Paul McCartney is not usually associated with the gaming industry. However, the former Beatles frontman recently dabbled in the area for the first time when writing music for the world’s most expensive game to date; Destiny. Working alongside composer Marty O’Donnell, McCartney wrote ‘Hope for the Future’; a song which was previously exclusive within the game but is being made available through iTunes from 8th December.

The sound: Much like he did with the Bond song ‘Live and Let Die,’ McCartney combines his songwriting abilities with the themes of the incidental score within the game (or film). In this case, electronic percussion, synthetic echoes, distorted bass, delayed guitars and orchestral strings are arranged into a pop style verse and chorus over which McCartney layers his vocals. The result is a sort of blockbuster sized space-age rock/pop anthem which although can be branded ‘cheesy,’ McCartney manages to make it work.

The lowdown: ‘Hope for the Future’ will be available through iTunes from 8th December. Alongside the original version, the download comes with four different mixes of the song. Online listings hint at a 2015 vinyl release of the single but is yet to be confirmed.
