THE dour duo of Practical Lovers have returned with a new song called ‘Inside Job’, and fans will be glad to know that it is exactly the sort of material the musicians are renowned for – a mixture of synths that drive the song throughout, along with a drum loop and punk bassline combination.
‘Inside Job’ has the typical emotive tone that Practical Lovers always aim for. Jack Wiles repeatedly asks ‘Is this love?’ at the end of every chorus and verse, while describing his overwhelming anguish for the partner that has just escaped from him.
While the two look consistently stern and gloomy in images and videos, it almost mirrors in their music. But the synths accompanying Wiles’ vocals are slightly uplifting given the subject of his lyrics, and his voice is on a comparatively deep level as White Lies’ Harry McVeigh – to give the song a mixture of intensity throughout. Overall, ‘Inside Job’ exemplifies that Practical Lovers are becoming one of the few originators of a new-wave renaissance.
It already raises eyebrows for their Agony LP, which will be released at the end of the November. Watch the video below:
