INTRODUCING yourself to the world with a seven minute opus is daring to say the least, but when it’s as miraculous as Pumarosa’s ‘Priestess’ then it’s hard to argue with their logic.
Attaining ample hype after the standalone track surfaced online and turning in passionately received performances during their recent run of dates supporting Gengahr (including Monday’s show at King Tut’s), the band have now aired an equally beautiful video to accompany their attention grabbing statement of intent.
Filled with recurring allusions to disco, indie pop, psychedelia and everything in between, ‘Priestess’ is a composition which swallows you whole and never once saps in momentum over its lengthy duration.
Capable of providing the soundtrack for a moment of pure catharsis due to its atmospheric swells and beguiling vocals, the introduction of its Nile Rodgers-esque guitar lines and insistent drumming disrupt the tranquility and add a degree of potency. The addition of unhinged saxophone and forays into less conventional percussion leaves the listener in a state of rapture as it becomes clear that what Pumarosa have conjured up is one of the most impressive debuts of the year bar none.
With a video that exhibits some exquisite contemporary dance that perfectly compliments the track’s wonderfully bewildering style, it’s essential viewing for anyone that had found themselves overcome with adoration upon first hearing their hypnotic statement of intent.
