redolent ‘funner’
SAY Award winners redolent have shared ‘funner’, a warm, upbeat electronic track built around a genuine moment of happiness on tour. Written during their short-lived stint at Columbia, it has all the same minimalist electronic loops, skitterish beats and playful synths – but they imbue them with a sunny nostalgia. They say: “It’s funny looking back on funner, it’s a bit of an attempt at a pop song for a major label. It takes me back to that time. I remember sitting on Andy’s car in Texas with an ice cream sandwich watching a sunset and having what felt like the opposite of a panic attack. I like its place on the album as a kind of goofy, disarming, not-that-deep break from a lot of the more intense, darker stuff on there.”
walt disco ‘Don’t Do This Alone’
walt disco have shared another preview of their upcoming self-titled album, out 2nd October via EMI North. ‘Don’t Do This Alone’ is a moving personal confession, spoken in a period of spiralling self-doubt. Brimming with urgency and emotion, it sees Jocelyn reflecting on obsession, identity struggles, and the overwhelming process of transition – ultimately reminding us that to ask for help when we need it. Set over glistening modular synths and a cinematic arrangement, it’s a deeply affecting insight into the new record – said to be their most ambitious and personal yet. Frontwoman Jocelyn says, ‘Don’t Do This Alone’ is “a song about the desperation of hunger and want that can eat you up, and the hope that comes from admitting you need help from those you love”.
pyncher ‘Love You Better’
Manchester risers pyncher play TENEMENT TRAIL next month, and they’ve just shared a new single called ‘Love You Better’ – featuring Phoebe Green. It’s set to feature on a new EP, their second of the year, titled The Eight Legged Band, out on November 20th.
The track drifts in on a woozy mellotron and boxy drums before kicking out into a chorus so lushly melodic that it could have been transplanted from the 60s. “The track is about knowing you’re not giving someone what they deserve” states Sam. “I’m trying hard to write a love song but they always end up bleak like this.”
“I met Phoebe when we were both guests at a David Byrne covers night in Manchester. We knew of each other, and we’ve always been fans of her music, but that was the first time we properly hung out” explains lead vocalist Sam Blakeley . “We were the only two who turned up early because we were nervous and wanted to soundcheck. We basically bonded over feeling very uncool.”
Humane ‘Penny Let Go’
East London five-piece Humane have unveiled a propulsive new single ‘Penny Let Go’. Embracing a darker, more expansive sound, it’s all driven by Max Hanley’s punchy vocals and the infectious, central hook – escalating as it goes on. Full of unease and uncertainty, they say: “The hook to this song came to me whilst driving to the studio, and we had written most of the song within the hour. It was quick so I wasn’t thinking about what it meant, but I enjoy the hook’s ambiguity. It could be about money or a girl, but in my head it’s more of a statement about ego death and a surrender, an instruction to let go when you’re not sure what it is you’re holding onto.”
Katie Gregson-Macleod ‘Good Guess’
Katie Gregson-macleod has shared new single ‘Good Guess’, taken from her upcoming album ‘Albatross’ – slated for release on 6th November via Matt Maltese’s Last Recordings on Earth. “I would never personally want to hook up with anyone who is in a happy, monogamous relationship. But this is the song I’d write if I did,” Katie says. Recalling the session, she explains: “The recorded version of this was a run-through; the first time we played it with the full band in the room. Jeremy had heard the song for the first time that day when Will and I roughly ran through it, and Nick hadn’t been there when the song was finished. A mess, a bloodbath that gave us what might be my favourite capture of the record.”
