Roxy Agogo 'SUPERCLOSEUPS'

IN Glasgow’s diverse music scene, it is not uncommon to find its many artists often dipping their toes in several creative projects at once. Boasting a lineup that will be very familiar to those in touch with the city’s music scene, the elusive collective Roxy Agogo have re-emerged from the shadows with a brilliant new track titled ‘SUPERCLOSEUPS’.

Created and led by the enigmatic lead vocalist Roxy himself, this is the first output from the outfit in some time following the initial buzz that surrounded them when they first appeared a couple of years ago; and it’s an impressive return that makes you hope they don’t leave it so long next time. The track opens with harsh electronic rhythms and huge, sleazy guitar riffs, creating a foreboding atmosphere before the chime of synths and echoing vocals come in; effectively reacquainting us with that otherworldly Roxy Agogo sound.

Characteristically experimental in style, the track plays with electronic beats, elements of spoken word and buzzing synths, at times emerging from the darkness with soaring harmonies. Laced with post-punk vibes, it somehow manages to be simultaneously expansive yet claustrophobic as the haunting vocals slink their way into your consciousness with their portrayal of obsession and lust; themes which dominate the song’s lyrical content. Interestingly though, this is perhaps one of the more accessible offerings from the Glasgow outfit with definite lines of a brooding melody; off-kilter but present all the same.

The matching visuals match the dark intensity of the song as experimental art comes together with song to dramatic effect; the flashing lighting and camera close ups adding to the feeling of unease surrounding the track.

Offering something fresh and strangely compelling that is unlike anything else at the moment, Roxy Agogo are a welcome return to Glasgow’s music scene. A number of live shows are also in the pipeline with dates at Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh on 11th November and Glasgow’s Broadcast on 23rd November.
