THE moment that Spyres first burst onto the scene in 2019 with their sensational debut single ‘Otherside’, we were hooked. Their stirring dual vocals, their punchy choruses and infectious energy had us from the off.

Since then, they’ve released a string of impressive singles and played a number of high profile shows – effectively cementing their reputation as one of the nation’s most exciting emerging bands.

Today though, they lay down their biggest statement yet, their debut EP ‘Dear Diary’ – an emotionally fuelled collection that explores themes of personal growth, adolescence, love, heartbreak and more. Co-produced by Chris Marshall and Johnny Madden, the four-track sees the quartet step into their own – reinforcing their songwriting credentials while delivering the catchy hooks we’ve come to know and love.

As its tile suggests, ‘Dear Diary’ is imbued with confessional lyrics, plenty of personal reflection and nostalgia. We’ve heard ‘Lost Without You’ and ‘Honestly’ before – both showing their more tender, introspective side – while ‘Test’ is like a bolt out the blue, a fierce rocker of a tune that’s full of attitude and relentless riffs. Meanwhile, the closer ‘Hated You First’ is heartfelt and anthemic, driven by quick rhythms and rousing guitars.

A snapshot of their time together so far, they said “This EP is really special to us. It has some of our best new songs on it and some familiar favourites from over the years. ‘Dear Diary’ captures all the angsty teenage feelings and drama that we all experience through life’s course. As we started the band when we were only 15/16 a lot of the songs on the EP have relevance to what it was like for us to basically grow up in the band together. we have had the time reflect and write the songs to our younger selves. The EP rounds up our teenage years as we are moving into our twenties and going through new life experiences.”
