ONCE the crown princes of British indie, it seemed at one time as though The Kooks may never capture the magic of of their past releases and would be resigned to an act which would perhaps be regarded as more nostalgic than current.
Demonstrating their defiance and a willingness to re-invent their sound like never before, the band have unveiled the kaleidoscopic ‘Creatures Of Habit.’
Filled with a dizzying array of funk tinged instrumentation that wouldn’t sound entirely out of place on an Unknown Mortal Orchestra record, it sees The Kooks dive headlong into new territory with a sense of brazenness that must be admired. Operating on the peripheries of modern psych and disco, it’s a daring move that may well be the opening volley in the next evolution of the band.
