The band: A six piece band from Edinburgh/Glasgow, The Merrylees are certainly ones to watch. They have previously supported The Zombies and Babyshambles, and were nominated for Best New Band at this year’s Scottish Variety Awards, and on top of that they will be supporting Paul Weller on all the dates of his Forestry Commission tour.
The sound: In a similar way to The Temples, The Merrylees have captured that 60’s Psychedelic sound, with a little more pop. Think of The Kinks crossed with The La’s. Their new single ‘Forever More’ (listen below) finds its dreamy element in the distant vocals and spare guitars, but running alongside this all is a very poppy hook. There is enough of a “spinning rainbow colours” feel for any psychedelic lover, perhaps not entirely original, but entirely enjoyable all the same.
The lowdown: For four dates in June and one in July, The Merrylees will support icon Paul Weller at the Forestry Commission – Forest Live. They are throwing in a few of theirown shows around that tour, including playing MacBeth in London on the 22nd June. Their single launch for ‘Forever More’ will be on the 31st May at the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh.
