LYLO ‘If The Light Is On’

After making a smooth and soulful return with ‘Hush’ a few weeks ago, Scottish trio LYLO are back with the shimmering ‘If The Light Is On’. Set to feature on their upcoming album ‘Thoughts of Never’, which is out 10th May via El Rancho Records, the track is awash with 80s R&B influences and yearning lyricism – imbued with a beautiful sense of vulnerability and wistfulness.

‘If The Light Is On’ is “a glimmer of hope in the midst of an ethereal, city soundscape”, the band shared. “The song was written as a cathartic experience to tackle metropolitan melancholy whilst finding comfort in its often vast, lonely spaces and those you wish you could reach. The instrumental captures a moment of stillness in the chaotic cityscape and provides ground for the vulnerable and soulful performance of Mitch Flynn’s vocal. Inspired by Prince / Martika’s ‘Love Thy Will Be Done’ and the longtime love the trio have for the warm tones of Alice Coltrane’s tape warped, Turiya Sings, LYLO felt comfort in interpreting their own vocal mantra of solace with the warped drone of city life.”

Nü Cros ‘CREASED’

Meet Nü Cros, a band from the North East of Glasgow who deal in bludgeoning noise-punk. Following on from last year’s ‘ILL’, the band have shared ‘CREASED’ – a three-minute assault of hammering drums, guitars and the gravelled screams of Kevin O’Brien. Erupting into a formidable wall of sound, it’s a track that holds nothing back – fearless, intense and endlessly gripping. The band headline Audio tonight to coincide with the single’s release before heading to play Supersonic in Paris next week.

No Windows ‘Zodiac 13’

Sound of Young Scotland winners No Windows have shared a new preview of their upcoming EP ‘Point Memo’, due out 3rd May via Fat Possum. New single ‘Zodiac 13’ follows on from ‘Song 01’ and ‘Fibbs’ and expands on their delicately crafted sound once again, showcasing their growing maturity in its carefully woven dynamics – Verity’s soft vocals set against a hazy indie-folk instrumentation which opens up into a heavy, crunching middle eight.

They say: “This song is written about the isolation I felt as the winter months started, it is about friendships ending and changing and coming to terms with their being a constant doubt when it comes to people near to you. Lyrically this is the oldest song on the EP, and I was much more unsure of my feelings back then, it’s nice to have something to look back on and see how my writing has changed.”

Lucy McWilliams ‘Mr Useless’

Irish singer-songwriter has shared her debut EP ‘Third Second Chance’ today, which features lead singler ‘Mr Useless’. Exploring themes of love, adulthood and boundaries, it’s a diverse collection that sees her expand her sonic ambition, throw genre out the window and deal with themes that are adjacent to her personal story.

Speaking of ‘Mr Useless’, she said The song is quite self-explanatory… It’s the first time I enjoyed being angry with a situation. I think sometimes having rose tinted glasses on can actually be quite refreshing, even if it is a little deluded. But, once they’re off it’s funny to see how things snap into place. I guess this song is about seeing flaws in a situation that you hadn’t before, and it was exciting to write from that perspective.”

Tom A. Smith ‘Get Me Started’

Premiered by Clara Amfo on Radio 1 this week, Tenement Trail alumni Tom A Smith has released an anthemic new rocker called ‘Get Me Started’. One of his most infectious tracks to date, he embraces those blistering indie-rock aesthetics with aplomb – delivering a soaring, euphoric chorus that is sure to incite many a singalong. Speaking about “Get Me Started”, he said, “This song was written about not having the self-belief or confidence to speak to people I like without a bit of alcohol to relax me. I’d rather appear to be something I’m not. Really enjoyed producing it as I had a clear idea of how I wanted it to sound.”

racecar ‘Lay Me Down’
